Senna bicapsularis,(Cassia bicapsularis) is an evergreen large shrub, or small tree, fast growing 8 to 12 feet tall, 8 to 10 feet spread. Light yellow to deep golden yellow buttercup-shaped flowers, with prominent curved stamens, appearing in large sprays, over a long period in autumn and winter. Showy flowers resembling butterflies. Easy-bloomer, and easy to grow. Attracts lots of butterflies.
This is an enormous group of trees and shrubs, concentrated in the tropics and subtropics of several continents. The cassias have been transferred in and out of the pea family at various times by taxonomists; they are currently “in”. To make matters worse, many have been assigned by some taxonomists to another genus, Senna.
Cassia angustifolia:The origin of cassia senna is thought to be tropical Africa as it is cultivated in various countries across the African continent like Egypt, Sudan, Nigeria etc. It is also native to Indian subcontinent as it is grown in India and Pakistan.
Initially, the Arabs are said to have introduced senna into European medicine during the 9th or 10th century. For ages, senna has been used as a potent cathartic or purgative.
Senna auriculata is suitable for landscaping roadways and home gardens. It tolerates drought and dry conditions, but not much cold. The flowers in racemes are also attractive
The root is used in decoctions against fevers, diabetes, diseases of urinary system and constipation. The leaves have laxative properties. The dried flowers and flower buds are used as a substitute for tea in case of diabetes patents. It is also believed to improve the complexion in women. In Africa the bark and seeds are said to give relief in rheumatism, eye diseases, gonorrhea, diabetes and gout.
Senna is also known by the names Alexandrian Senna and Rajavriksha. Cassia senna is native to tropical Africa, and is cultivated in Egypt and the Sudan; Cassia angustifolia is native to India, and is cultivated mainly in India and Pakistan. The parts of this plant used medicinally are the leaves and the pods.
