I found this grand old beautiful gum tree during an early winter hike to the Blue Lake region of Kosciuszko National Park, near Charlottes Pass, and was immediately taken by it. The trek had been beset by intermittent showers, followed by short lived bursts of sunshine, causing the perfect conditions for rainbows. I found myself treated to several of them during the morning, usually when there was no pleasing composition at hand.
Coming across this spectacular gum tree, and being quite exhausted, I decided to set up my camera and simply wait and see if anything would transpire. With the sun at the right angle and the drizzle continuing to fall another rainbow was possible. Incredibly I had only really just settled in and started on lunch, when a colourful rainbow dropped itself into the scene like it had been custom ordered for the job.
The intensity of it came and went over the next half hour or so. The light would dance across the valley, only to be gone seconds later. With the big medium format camera tripod mounted, I just kept pressing the shutter release every few minutes capturing a variety of choices. This frame proved to be the best of them, with the greatest rainbow presence, a nice spotlight on the valley below and no wind in the branches.
That was the last of the good weather for that trip, with the evening becoming quite cold, windy and wet, causing me to abandon my original plans to camp and instead walk out again. After 20km or more of hill walking I was about done in when night time found me finally back at the car. However, I was very happy with this image.
