Sebring International Raceway

Originally named Hendricks Army Airfield, once operated as a training base for B-17 pilots from 1941-1945, was renamed Sebring Airport after being deactivated in 1945. Alec Ulmann looking for a site to convert military aircraft to civilian use found Sebring and realized the runways had the potential to host a sports car endurance race similar to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. On December 31, 1950 the first race at Sebring was held, The Sam Collier 6 Hour Memorial. This was also the first sports car endurance race held in the U.S. Two years later, the first 12 Hours or Sebring was held, March 15, 1952. The following year the 12 Hours of Sebring was the first event under the new FIA Sports Car Championship where a Chrysler powered Cunningham won which gave the U.S. its first international sports car victory. With the 12 Hours of Sebring slowly growing in popularity, Sebring hosted the U.S.’s first Formula One race in 1959.
