    Robber fly
A Robber fly in our garden at Jansenville in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. n Foto van ’n roofvlieg in ons tuin op Jansenville in die Oos-Kaap van Suid-Afrika. The flies of South Africa are currently classified into 91 families. There are about 500 species of greatly varying sizes of Robber flies found in southern Africa. The Asilidae are the Robber fly family which largely inhabit semi-arid and arid regions of the world. They are powerfully built, bristly flies with short, sharp, stout sucking mouthparts. The name 'Robber flies' reflects their notoriously aggressive predatory habits; they feed mainly on other insects and they largely wait in ambush and catch their prey in flight. They have stout, spiny legs, a dense 'beard' of bristles on the face, and a depression in the forehead. Many species of Robber flies may be confused with sand or mud wasps, especially when they are in flight, the difference being that robber flies only have one pair of wings, rather than the two pairs of the wasps. Korthoringvlieë behoort aan die Asilidea familie wat roofvlieë en byvlieë insluit. Baie soorte lyk ook soos bye of perdebye Camera: CanonEOS 500D
