Remembrance
I was at Ginninderra Village in Canberra with my family the other day, and I met this lovely lady of the RSL, Gwen Kirk.
Gwen was disappointed that a shop was closed as when she was there selling poppies last year, they had a pet bird that talked to you.
We introduced ourselves and chatted for a while, and her sense of humour and sharp memory were evident as she told me stories and anecdotes about patent shoes, her new car, her embarassment at her photograph being published in a newspaper to discover later that her medals were pinned crooked, and her pride in women who had risen up the ranks in what is historically a man's world.
On the condition that I straighten her pins and medals, Gwen let me take her photo in front of the empty shop.
At 85 years old, this warm, bright and determined woman is a timely reminder of what it is to be a proud, courageous Australian.
