View Larger on Chockstone Photography The Pinnacles is a rocky lookout high above the Wonnangatta River Valley on an escarpment known as Eagles Crest. On a good day you can see as far as the Gippsland Lakes region, which is possibly why this location was used for the fire lookout station. The Alpine National Park is the largest National Park in Victoria and bushfires are an annual challenge. Consider checking the appropriate emergency warnings before heading in. There are several extreme ways to access this area by four-wheel drive for those with sufficient experience and gear, but it can also be reached in a two-wheel drive car, in clear summer or autumn weather, out of Licola if you do not mind a good two hours of rough and winding dirt roads with plenty of blind corners. The last kilometre or two up to the escarpment, however, might tax a conventional vehicle. Be aware that in winter the road will be covered in snow and may not be cleared. You can bush camp overnight at nearby Horseyard Flat camping area, which has toilets, plenty of shade under nice snow gums and the nearby Moroka River. From here you can also do the Moroka Gorge hike which is 12km return and takes in First Falls. Allow about 6 hours to complete the walk.
