Perching Rufous Hummingbird
A male rufous hummingbird clings to the top of a broom bush to rest and take stock of his surroundings. I've found it's better to wait near a favorite resting spot rather than try to sneak up. Hummingbirds' territories are remarkably small and well-defined. I can go to a spot a hundred yards from here and find an Anna's hummingbird (magenta head) at any time, just as I could last year, but I've never seen the Anna's outside of that small area. Nor have I ever seen a rufous in the Anna's area. Taken on undeveloped land in Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast, British Columbia, Canada. CAMERA: NIKON D90 LENS: NIKKOR AF-S 70-300mm VR @ 300mm
