One of the most important and most visible of parasitic flies is the family called Tachinidae, commonly known as the Tachinid Flies or Parasitic Flies. There are well over 8,200 different kinds of these flies known around the world. They occur in almost all habitats all over the world. Some of the species can be pretty frightening in appearance, especially when all you know is that it's some sort of fly and therefore probably evil. Most species are fairly large, and possibly very noisy as they fly, so our instinct of course would be to kill them when we see them. One should learn to tell the good from the bad in our landscapes, and to attempt to preserve the good guys when they are present. In general, most tachinid flies are relatively large and bristly. They often mimic wasp or bees. Adult tachinids feed on nectar and the honeydew of aphids and scale insects while the larvae parasitize caterpillars. Most tachinids deposit their eggs directly on the body of their host, and it is not uncommon to see caterpillars with several tachinid eggs on them. Upon hatching the larva usually burrows into its host and feeds internally. When fully developed it leaves the host and pupates nearby. Larvae (maggots) of most members of this family are parasitoids (they develop inside a living host, ultimately killing it), and a few are parasitic (they do not kill the host). They are endoparasites (internal parasites) of caterpillars of butterflies and moths, adult and larval beetles, sawfly larvae, various types of true bugs and grasshoppers.
