One Summer Dream
Just another little something I scribbled up whilst on holiday. :)
What this scene depicts is Lower Manhattan during a stage of high development during the mid-1980's. Rubble and excavated dirt from the construction of the Twin Towers and surrounding World Trade Center complex was used to create reclaimed land onto which the World Financial Center was built, a complex of smaller office towers across the West Side Highway on some of the former dockyards of the Hudson shore.
The WFC, now known as Brookfield Place, was built between 1985 and 1997, with the tallest structure 200 Vesey Street (formerly known as 3 WFC) being completed first. The design of the structures was carried out by Olympia & York, the same folks who designed One Canada Square in Canary Wharf, London, formerly Britain's tallest skyscraper. Separating the two halves of the WFC is the Winter Garden indoor greenhouse and auditorium, which was opened in 1988 and features a beautifully ornate botanical garden. Formerly, the Winter Garden provided access to the adjacent World Trade Center by way of a pedestrian footbridge across the West Side Highway.
Behind the Twin Towers, the final structure of the World Trade Center to be built is seen under construction, this being 7 World Trade Center, also known as the Salomon Brother's Building, which opened in 1987. 7 WTC was a 47 storey structure, and 3rd highest in the World Trade Center complex behind the Twin Towers. The structure acted as an emergency bunker for the Mayor of New York during the event of a crisis, being fitted with water tanks and power generators independent of the conventional city infrastructure.
