View Larger on Chockstone Photography Located in East Gippsland, not far from Bairnsdale, the Mitchell River feeds into the Gippsland Lakes system at Lake King forming the longest "silt jetties" in the world. This delta, formed over thousands of years by sediment deposition, can be explored by car if you don't mind a narrow dirt road with river on one side and lake on the other. Upstream, the river flows from Mitchell River National Park right into Bairnsdale, the largest city in the East Gippsland region. Bairnsdale also marks the southern end-point of the Great Alpine Road which will take you into some of Victoria's best mountain ranges.
