Medieval Rabbit: Purgatory

Devotion Delays Damnation draws directly from late medieval manuscript marginalia, where artists often placed friends, family, and familiar figures within scenes of purgatory. In such images, the living stand at the threshold — praying, pleading, and calling forth remembered virtues — believing that devotion could lessen suffering and shorten the soul’s stay in fire. This pencil-style illustration shows an anthropomorphic rabbit bearing a cross at the gates of hell, while other rabbits endure the flames within. Taunting devils look on, yet the scene is not one of despair — it is an image of intercession, hope, and moral urgency. Inspired by 14th-century Books of Hours (ca. 1375–1400), this work intentionally remains uncolored, echoing the raw, preparatory sketches that once preceded illuminated manuscripts. The distressed linework and restrained palette emphasize contemplation over spectacle.
