Makoko Houses on Slit
Lagos is the commercial hub of Nigeria and possibly a centrifugal city along the West African subregion.
Here is a settlement that is inhabited by various people from other coastal West African region.
The place is called Makoko along the coastal fringes of the Lagos lagoon and also a subject of interest by the United Nations on urban issues vis a vis slum challenges in major capital cities of the world.
But the people that inhabit this fringes on close encounter are just happy being there but they ask for basic infrastructural needs from government.
However there is a genuine threat, that the Lagos State government of Nigeria in its aspiration to make Lagos a modern megapolis is planning to move the people from this slum, elsewhere in due course.
So one may not be seeing this scenario again.
This picture was taken in 2003 amongst my entry for the 50th Venice Biennale in Italy.
