View Larger on Chockstone Photography When you think of Mount Kosciuszko, Australia’s tallest peak, you probably picture yourself skiing down the slopes at Thredbo, but the summer months can be just as popular with the little village full of mountain bikers making use of the chairlifts and downhill trails. However, my interest has always been for hiking and photography. Initially this was as a little tacker trying to keep up with my long legged father. Several decades later, things are much the same, except now it is own boy striding along beside me, full of energy and excitement. On this particular evening, we had been moving steadily along the summit track when it became apparent that the big storm predicted to pass us was instead right over head. Thunder bellowed and way off in the distance lightning flickered. I managed to finish capturing this scene just moments before the rain came. We hastily packed away tripods and cameras and sought the relative safely of lower elevations, with the occasional crack of thunder echoing across the alpine plateau. By the time we returned to the chairlifts they were closed, much as we’d expected, but the descent down the ski slopes to the beckoning lights of Thredbo was far more gruelling than I had remembered. My knees where toast when finally the car presented itself out of the darkness and we could relax again. What an adventure!
