View Larger on Chockstone Photography Kelly Hut resides within the Alpine National Park not too far Falls Creek village. A hut was built on this site back 1890's, but burnt down in 1956 and was replaced. In good weather you can do a lovely 10km return walk out to it from Rocky Valley Pondage starting from Big River Fire Trail, and visit nearby Fitzgeralds Hut as well. I would even go so far as to give it the family friendly tick, so long as you understand it is still an alpine environment and the weather can turn serious at any time. Obviously in winter, you will need to ski out from the village instead which adds a few kms to the trip. The area also has some grand old snow gums, though unfortunately many of them have succumbed to bushfires. For my own photographic purposes, I wanted fog and deliberately put this one off a few years until I had both the opportunity and forecast. Being quite familiar with hikes in the region, I decided to hike in quite late, and be up for a dawn shoot. Fog can be a fickle thing, but this one was as thick as soup and hung around for hours, giving me plenty of time to try several compositions. Trudging out, through a heavy rain, I was quite damp, but elated to have captured the scene under the conditions I had hoped for, and to have enjoyed another wild experience in the great outdoors.
