Hopeless
I think they know me now. It seems word gets around. Their circle is amazingly tight. Certain names dropped bring openess... Caution is dismissed. Trust is granted. 'Come on... let me show you my world.' A dread world I never knew existed. Yeah, I had heard of it. We all have. A sanitary word called 'homeless.' But I never looked it dead in the eye And had a blinking contest with it How about we be honest? How about we call it what it is? It ain't 'homeless.' It's more like 'hopeless.' In the middle of all of this wealth... They are the broken ones, hungry. Surrounded by luxury and capital... There are painful moans at night The cold and the damp penetrate entirely. Deep hacking suspicious coughs echo. It's easy just to say that they deserve it. They're not as 'worthy' as you or I. They're mentally ill. Or lazy. Drunks. Or drug addicted miscreants. Subhuman whack jobs. 'Why don't they just go to a shelter?' I don't care what they are. I don't care what they did. I don't care if they're nuts. I care about the answer. Why is it so elusive? Maybe I shouldn't have ever cared... Maybe I shouldn't have gotten sucked in To their miserable plane of existence. When I sit among them And I see the contemptuous glances And the dismissal of them as humans That's where I see the big ugly wrong. Maybe we'll never solve the problem In fact I doubt that we ever will. What should change is one thing... One thing we could each change now The way that people look at these people. They are human beings. Is it possible to recognize them at least as that? Why lable them for the thing they are without? 'Homeless.' As if a home would make them miraculously whole. A little honesty with ourselves would go a long way. 'Hopeless.' ALL proceeds from any sale of any image of the hopeless in my portfolio will go directly to them if I can find them, other homeless people in Chicago if I can't.
