Going Down!
A Stink Bug or Shield Bug against the wall of our house in Jansenville in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. True Bugs are often mistaken for beetles. Bugs and beetles may sometimes look similar at first glance, but they belong to two quite different insect groups: Bugs (Order Hemiptera) and beetles (Order Coleoptera). Shield Bugs in the family Scutelleridae and Stink Bugs in the family Pentatomidae are closely related and share many similarities. They can be recognized by the shieldlike shape and the large triangular scutullum, the posterior portion of the thorax. They are plant eaters, for the most part, though some prey on other insects. The mouthparts are designed for piercing and sucking. Stink Bugs and Shield Bugs are harmless to humans and pets, but they do emit a disagreeable odor from glands on the thorax. While most Stink Bugs feed on plants using their sucking mouthparts, and many are considered agricultural pests, some bugs like the Spined Soldier Bugs are predators, and though they may also prey on beneficial insects, their presence would generally be welcomed in the garden.
