Pantala flavescens, the Globe Skimmer or Wandering Glider, is a wide-ranging dragonfly of the family Libellulidae. This species is considered to be the most widespread dragonfly on the planet. They are commonly found near water in all parts of Africa. Also found in Asia, the Americas and Australia. It is thought they survive the ocean flights by gliding on the winds, feeding on other smaller insects. They breed in temporary rainwater pools taking advantage of the monsoon rains of India, the short rains of east Africa and the summer rains of southern Africa. (Wikipedia)
Naaldekokers behoort tot die orde Odonata (die getandes) en bestaan uit die Anisoptera (naaldekokers), Zygoptera (waterjuffers) en Anisozygoptera (’n grootliks uitgestorwe groep). Naaldekokers word gekenmerk aan hulle groot saamgestelde oë, twee paar sterk, deursigtige vlerke en ’n verlengde liggaam. Alhoewel naaldekokers soos ander insekte oor ses bene beskik, kan hulle nie loop nie. Daar is byna 3000 soorte wêreldwyd.
