View Larger on Chockstone Photography Victoria's Mt Buffalo can be overlooked during winter in favour of more popular skiing destinations that also have a proximity to Melbourne such as Falls Creek, Mt Buller or Mt Hotham. However Mount Buffalo offers some unique mountain attractions that really appeal. One of these is the grand old Mt Buffalo Chalet and nearby stunning views across the gorge overlooking the Ovens Valley and ranges beyond. Whilst the view can be quite exciting in summer, it is probably at its best in the cooler months of the year when early morning atmosphere, and sometimes snowy conditions, can become backlit by a powerful sunrise and really deliver something quite special. On this occasion a bank of low cloud shrouded the mountain during much of the dawn. Rising slowly it revealed a golden sunrise that just managed to penetrate the valley, catching the many foggy highlights and bringing the scene to life.
