First time for everything

Where: Lone Tree, Milarrochy Bay, Scotland What: Mist and tree When: May 2014 With What: Fuji Velvia 50, f11, 6 secs, 120mm, tripod. This is probably the most shot tree in Scotland. I've seen many shots of this tree, most, much better than mine, but I still felt compelled to go there and take a picture of it. Apologies. I spent ages driving up and down in the dark about 8pm at night where I thought this tree was. Could I find it. no. at around 12pm I was so tired I parked up in the nearest public car park and decided to sleep in the car, which is the first time I'd ever done that. It was also the scariest, save for stupidly once (many years ago) camping in a forest. Spooky noise's, twigs and other things hitting the car and it's very thin tinny sounding roof. Wind blowing the car around and a hail storm about 2 am did not make for a restful evening. To say that I was fully prepared to take this shot would be an over estimation. At 5am I left the car and headed off to find this mythical tree. I was probably a mile up the road and soon regretted the walk/hobble to where I thought the tree was. I actually had no idea but knew I was in the right vicinity as there were a few signs. It was raining, windy and boggy. In my tired haze I forgotten to put on some proper foot ware (Ugg Boots) which quickly resembled the thing from the black lagoon, I was even walking on the main road at this point. Too tired to turn back I ventured on. This is new, I thought to myself. Well I eventually found the tree about 50 minutes later, which was typically right next to a car park dedicated to people coming to see the tree. Doh!!!!. Well after setting up the camera I took a few shots with my iPhone and film camera, the rain was coming in from all directions and at this moment I was at one with nature. Maybe a better term would be, assimilated with it. Thankfully after taking a shot or two, I packed up and took the much shorter route back with extra squelching as I walked/hobbled. After getting back home a few days later I waited for the shots to come back from the lab, only to find that nearly every picture I took was stupidly dark. EH???? A quick Google later revealed my stupidity, reciprocity failure. Double Doh!! I should have made an allowance for the failure of the film by adding time to the exposure. I'll never do that again! Another thing I've learnt about Fuji Velvia and long exposures is the colour radically shifts with a bluey magenta tone, which is why I converted this to B&W.
