Early Spring
This closeup photo was captured on March 23rd, 2012, just before sunset. It was photographed from the top step of an eight foot ladder. It was shot with a Canon EOS 30D camera, through a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro Prime lens. The aperture was set to f/5, with a 1/100th second exposure (no flash). A Manfrotto tripod was used with the legs inserted into the tool holder holes on top of the ladder, for stability. Several people passing by suggested that it would not be a good idea to fall from that height...duh. This is the earliest date I have ever seen these magnolia blossoms in full bloom...ever! Their fleeting beauty is a very welcome sight to my eyes. In just a day or two, I will begin planning the best way to improve my magnolia photos for future springs, because these gorgeous new blooms will have already turned brown and fallen to the ground. Maybe that's why I love them so much. This magnolia tree is in my neighbor's front yard, in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. I watch this tree very carefully every spring, knowing that the blossoms will only be at their peak for two or three days each year. In 2011, I was unable to get any magnolia photos, due to unfavorable wet, snowy and extremely windy conditions. This spring has been making up for last year's disappointment very nicely.
