Dutch Irises
A friend's celebration of her recovery from cancer with one hundred irises forever endeared me to this beautiful flower. Since it blooms during spring it symbolizes hope and fresh beginnings. I chose to design the irises with flowing, calligraphic leaves and stems using dyes that I painted on silk with watercolor techniques. Molten wax was used to preserve parts of the design that were to be protected from new applications of dye. When complete, the wax is removed, revealing true colors and details on luminous silk.
