An African Huntsman Spider or Rain Spider against the wall of our house at Jansenville in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. South Africa has a rich fauna of spiders with about 3000 known species from 67 families. Spiders are widely feared, but they play a very important role in nature and their importance cannot be overstated. Sparassidae (formerly Heteropodidae) are a family of spiders known as Huntsman Spiders because of their speed and mode of hunting. In southern Africa they are known as Rain Spiders and Lizard-eating Spiders. Twenty eight Palystes species occur in central, eastern and southern Africa with twelve resident in South Africa. Palystes castaneus is a near endemic Cape genus as it occurs in the Eastern, Northern and Western Cape and also at Oranjemund (Namibia). They're called Rain Spiders in Southern Africa because they tend to be more active just before and after it rains. It's very common to have these spiders move into homes just before the summer rains. While they can bite, their venom is relatively weak and a human will recover in a matter of days. The females will get very aggressive while defending their eggs.
