A Shield Bug or Stink Bug nymph on the leaves of the Yarrow in our garden at Jansenville in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. ’n Stink- of skildbesie-nimf op die blare van 'n duisendblad in ons tuin op Jansenville. Pentatomoidea is a superfamily of insects in the Heteroptera suborder of the Hemiptera order. They are commonly referred to as shield bugs, chust bugs, and stink bugs. They eat by means of a short beak and use this to suck sap and juices out of plants. These bugs have glands in their thorax between the first and second pair of legs which produce a foul smelling liquid. This liquid is used defensively to deter potential predators and is sometimes released when the bugs are handled. The nymphs, similar to adults except smaller and without wings, also have stink glands. Stink Bugs and Shield Bugs are harmless to humans and pets and although some are pretty in shape and in colour, many shield bugs are agricultural pests.
