Die Karoo-kruisbessie, Grewia Robusta, (of karsie soos dit in die Jansenville-distrik genoem word), is ’n medium-hoë (1- 2m ) houtagtige inheemse struik van die Karoo in Suid-Afrika. Dié plant het harige, donkergroen blare met baie dekoratiewe, helder pienk blomme. Die vrugte lyk baie soos dié van Grewia occidentalis. Dit is ’n stadige groeier. Die Karoo-kruisbessie is ’n geharde struik, wat hoewel dit in ’n beperkte deel van die Oos-Kaap voorkom, elders ook baie goed sal aard. Dit is egter nie so geredelik in tuinsentrums en inheemse kwekerye beskikbaar nie. Vir sy bestandheid teen koue en min reën, is die Karoo-kruisbessie ’n sterk kandidaat vir ’n informele tuin wat nie so afhanklik van duur kraanwater is nie.
Grewia robusta or Karoo Cross-Berry is a medium sized, multi-stemmed indigenous shrub or small tree from the Karoo in South Africa with pink flowers and edible berries. The pretty flowers have vibrant yellow contrasting stamens.Tough and beautiful this woody shrub is very similar to Grewia occidentalis. Their distribution areas overlap, but the Karoo cross-berry has a much more restricted habitat in the southern and Eastern Cape, whilst Grewia occidentalis is found from the Cape to Zimbabwe along the eastern parts of the country. Grewia robusta has much smaller leaves, grows in a more compact fashion and flowers more profusely in summer. Excellent bonsai subject or specimum shrub, also attractive planted as a small, tough hedge or grouped in the mixed border. Like most Karoo plants it is drought tolerant. Location: Eastern Cape thicket of South Africa.
