Colgate Clock

An iconic piece of the Jersey City skyline is on its way back. The 90-year-old Colgate Clock, which was dismantled and removed for restoration in June, is now being returned to its spot near the Goldman Sachs tower. Workers began bolting the timepiece's frame into place at about 10:30 this morning, though they do not expect to have the clock's face in place today. The clock, a local landmark that survived even after the factory it adorned was demolished in 1988, was removed three months ago so it could be outfitted with LED lights, a better foundation and new steel, according to City Planner Bob Cotter. In an e-mail to city officials just before the clock was removed, Cotter said it would be installed “slightly higher” than it sat before. Colgate-Palmolive owns the clock, which made its debut on top of the old Colgate factory in December 1924. It was designed so it could be seen and read from a great distance, and for years it was considered the world’s biggest time piece.
