First lit in 1884, the 32-metre Cape Nelson Lighthouse is still in operation today. It boasts a nice little cafe and onsite accommodation available to visitors with enough coin. The cliff-top walk is well worth exploring, with interesting views down to the crashing waves.
Having attempted to photograph this scene several times, only to be thwarted by excessive wind or a lack of exciting light, I was happy to finally capture it as a long exposure beneath a vibrant twilight sky during a wonderful little father-son trip.
The last time we were here, our boy was six and full of excitement for the adventure. Now ten years older, he proved to be great company as we strolled along the cliffs, remarking on every little occurrence. Oddly shaped rocks, foamy white waves, birds out at sea, textures in the clouds, everything received a careful analysis.
Thus engrossed, we waited, but it was not until we had packed up and were about to leave that the light became interesting. As is often the case with landscape photography, waiting just that little bit longer can make all the difference. The light I had been hoping for made an all too brief appearance before fading away moments later. Fortunately, I was ready with the shutter.
