The Macalister River at Licola winds through a picturesque rural valley at the southern gateway to Victoria's Alpine National Park, where forested mountains meet fertile river flats and open grazing country. The surrounding farmland, traditionally used for sheep and cattle grazing, gives the area a distinctly pastoral character, while the small township of Licola sits quietly beside the river as one of Victoria's most unusual communities, being the state's only privately owned town. Remote, self-sufficient and surrounded by spectacular High Country scenery, Licola is a popular base and stopping point for four-wheel-drive enthusiasts and campers heading into the rugged alpine country.
Having explored this region many times over the years, I would strongly recommend taking care on the roads, particularly around blind corners. The drive into Licola is largely straightforward on a winding sealed road, but beyond the township, as you head further into the Alpine National Park, the roads become narrow and unsealed, with steep drop-offs and limited room to pass. Oncoming vehicles can appear unexpectedly around almost any bend, so a cautious approach is essential. That said, the country beyond Licola is truly remarkable, offering spectacular mountain scenery, numerous historic huts, remote walking tracks and a wonderful sense of wilderness. With the appropriate vehicle, adequate supplies and careful preparation, it is an extraordinary part of Victoria's High Country well worth exploring.
