Gosford, on the picturesque Central Coast of New South Wales, is a relaxed waterfront city where bushland, beaches and Brisbane Water come together. Just over an hour north of Sydney, it makes an excellent base for exploring scenic walking trails, waterways, nearby surf beaches and national parks.
Having driven through Gosford many times over the years, I had rarely taken the time to look for photographic opportunities. Usually, I was heading north in search of wilder, more natural places or returning home after spending days among the mountains and rivers further inland. On this trip, however, our lad and I suddenly found ourselves with an unexpected sunset and no time to relocate. Once again driving through the bustling city, it seemed unlikely we would find a car park, let alone a worthwhile photograph, before the light faded.
The obvious subject was the waterfront itself. Clouds had drifted across the sky all day, while the complete lack of wind created perfect conditions for reflections. We leapt out of the car and headed straight for the public wharf as the light began to come alive, only to discover it was closed for renovations. In the end, that worked in our favour, forcing us to photograph the jetty from the shoreline instead. This positioned us towards the most dramatic part of the sky, which erupted into brilliant colour just as twilight settled over Brisbane Water.
