The little red railway gatekeeper's cottage just outside Uralla, in the Armidale region, is a rare survivor from the expansion of the Main Northern Railway through New England in the early 1880s. This heritage-listed cottage was built as the residence of the crossing gatekeeper, whose job was to manually operate the level crossing gates whenever trains approached, ensuring the safe passage of both rail and road traffic.
Having come across this scene by chance well over a decade ago, I had immediately recognised it as photo worthy. Such a cute subject that one can drive right up to, which is perfectly positioned to be back or side lit by the rising sun, should have been relatively easy to capture. However, it took more than a dozen attempts, spread out over the years, because the conditions were always cloudless, foggy or draped in light soaking drizzle. Eventually it all came together and fate presented me with some lovely scattered high cloud that retained colour but did not prevent the glorious low angle, golden light of dawn from painting the cottage, bringing the vibrant red brickwork to life. Even the railway tracks caught the bright gold hues, creating an amazing leading line straight into the sun.
For anyone exploring the Armidale region, you have a wealth of options. Coming across from the coast you can go via Dorrigo National Park which has a cool tree top walk, or you can come through Glouster and drive up Barrington Tops which offers great views and mossy trees. The region is also home to countless waterfalls, far too many to list here. Ebor falls is probably the most accessible. And if that is not enough there is also Warrumbungle National Park further inland which has great walks amongst towering hills.
