I am unlikely to ever become tired of photographing the impressive gorge at Mount Buffalo in Victoria. The experience of standing atop such a grand vista, particularly first thing in the morning as the sun crests the horizon, is something genuinely absorbing, almost overwhelming. From the many lookouts, the land falls away in dramatic granite cliffs that plunge around 300 metres into the valley below, creating a sense of scale that never seems to diminish no matter how many times I return.
The conditions, of course, greatly impact the scene but also present such a wealth of photographic opportunities that it is actually quite easy to come away with a wildly different image on every visit, despite being constrained by a limited set of viewpoints. In winter the plateau can be cold enough for regular snowfall and cloud inversions are common, while in the warmer months the valley often fills with mist before dawn, each season offering its own character and atmosphere.
On this occasion I had driven up for dawn. Wandering around in the dark, I settled on a position and set up my gear to wait, only to be treated to an amazing cloud inversion. The morning sun beamed golden light across the tops of the clouds filling the vast valley below, transforming the landscape into a sea of glowing white stretching to the horizon. With the sheer walls of the gorge emerging above the cloud deck and the first warm light touching the surrounding peaks, it felt as though I was looking out over an entirely different world. What a great start to the day.
