Cabo da Roca
A stone monument at the clifftop here marks the spot with a line from Portugal's national poet: "where the land ends and the sea begins." For centuries before satellites and accurate maps, sailors genuinely believed this rust-red headland was the edge of the known world - the last solid ground before an ocean nobody had yet crossed. The wind hasn't let up much since, and the lighthouse still stands exactly where it needs to.
