View Larger on Chockstone Photography Bluff Knoll is the tallest mountain in the picturesque Stirling Range at the southern end of Western Australia. The peak is often shrouded in low cloud, particular during the early hours of the day. This visit was no exception, but a window of visibility opened, for a few seconds, right on sunrise making this amazing summit view possible, and the steep hike up all the more rewarding. From the top you can see all the way to the coast near Albany, and back across the neighbouring outcrops that form the Stirling Range, with its Eucalypt woodland, banksias and occasional grass trees. The trek up takes a good couple of hours or more, and is something of a slog, but the way down is, of course, significantly easier. The car park, has toilets and some nice benches, with grand views in and of itself, so even if you lack the fitness for the climb, just a drive to the base is well worth the effort.
