Blairs Hut is a log cabin that sits in a little clearing, nestled beside a lovey stream, deep into a valley about halfway between Mount Hotham and Falls Creek. Originally built by Tom and Frank Blair in 1923, it has been rebuilt after fires at least once.
The hut represents a welcome refuge for bush walkers attempting to do the rather challenging trek, involving a big decent into this valley and subsequent ascent, between those two elevated locations. A bit over 5km closer to Mount Hotham, you will find Dibbins Hut which tends to become very crowded during peak hiking weather, making Blairs possibly a better choice for through walkers.
The quickest way to access the hut is to use a 4WD from Mount Beauty township via West Kiewa Logging Road. This road is locked during winter for good reason. It is quite remote and can unexpectedly become impassable in snowy conditions, something I discovered by experience during a snap freeze just ahead of the official snow season. Fortunately snow chains provided enough traction to escape, though I would not have wanted to delay any longer.
Luckily the previous day had granted me this image, shot during a rainy afternoon. The damp created a lovely misty atmosphere and deepened the natural colours and tones. Having attempted this photograph several times before, without success, I had specifically planned the trip to arrive during a rainy few days, so was rather pleased that the image turned out as I had hoped.
