The hut is a welcome resting and camping place for hikers ascending onto the exposed rocky ridge leading the summit plateau. Residing in the Alpine National Park, Mount Bogong via Staircase Spur (16km return) is considered a challenging route and should be treated as a serious undertaking particularly in winter when whiteout conditions are common and the track is invisible under dangerous snow and ice slopes. Carrying GPS and a satellite phone or PLB is recommended. An alternative descent route via Eskdale Spur is quite popular, and offers a gentler decline, though at a cost of greater distance. Camping at Mountain Creek Campground is free and very pretty. It can be accessed in about 20 minutes, without a 4WD vehicle from Mt Beauty township. Note, the carpark is small and fills up quite quickly.
