BLUE FILTRATION!
A bulky outcrop of a wreck supports a myriad of growth with masses of blue sponge material and tufty red algal patches. Sponges play an important (often overlooked) ecological role within the marine environment. These animals 'pump huge amounts of water' through their body every day. In so doing ~ they help to 'filter the surrounding coastal waters' of marine contaminants such as heavy metals and absorbing carbon dioxide and marine pathogens. They also provide a 'source of oxygen and other nutrients' essential to much undersea life. This blue encrusting 'volcano' sponge ~ gains its own 'personal nutrition plan' ~ from the rich source of plankton drifting in strong currents ~ often found near the verticals of the wreck. Renowned as a rich source of biologically active metabolites ~ many sponges have anti-microbial ~ anti-viral or anti-tumour properties useful within both biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries ~ which assist the health and well being of us humans.
