Athena: The Goddess of War
“ATHENA: THE GODDESS OF WAR”
Ezekiel was arguably the world’s foremost Jewish American, Beaux-Arts trained sculptor, using inspiration from Greece and Roman masters. In Homer’s lliad, Athena, inspires and fights alongside the Greek heroes defending their homeland. As the goddess of wisdom, war and the crafts, she represented the intellectual and civilized side of war and personified excellence in close combat and glory. On the drum of Ezekiel’s masterwork, Athena appears under the shield marked “1861”, the first year of the invasion of the southern states by northern forces. Ezekiel’s dignified Athena is dressed in an intricate cloak of mail draped over her flowing gown with stylized folds. Her head is crowned with an ancient Greek Corinthian Helmet complete with plume. Looking to the viewer’s right she begins the journey of the War that was finally completed by this work, the Reconciliation memorial.
ABOUT THE COLLECTION
Dr. Ann McLean, artist, historian and educator, has generously created five watercolors of Moses Ezekiel’s masterpiece to help continue funding for the litigation to restore the Memorial.
Her watercolor renderings are based on photographs she took of the memorial in situ, before the removal process began between Hanukkah and Christmas 2023, and after the “Wreaths Across America” wreath had been placed at the memorial’s base, as was done did other grave-markers throughout Arlington Cemetery.
Dr. McLean esteems Ezekiel’s skill in rendering the human form in high relief, as well as the entire conception (silhouette) of the memorial, a testimony to Ezekiel’s rigorous training In Beaux-Arts classicism while in Europe. She was moved by the rhythmic interplay of the figures and the tender stories Ezekiel tells about all families affected by outbreak of war. She has chosen five special scenes.
We hope you will enjoy owning them as much as we have enjoyed working on the project with Dr. McLean and that you will enjoy placing one of these works in your home or office, or giving them as gifts.
