Each of the cows in the parade was painted by a different artist. Each artist was paired with a community group and worked with them to identify a theme. This one was created by Greater Shantallow Community Arts who named it Amelia. It was inspired by aviator Amelia Earhart who landed in Derry 80 years ago. Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic when her bright red plane touched down at Ballyarnott, in Derry, in May 1932. The artists involved were Dearbhaile Heaney and Billy McGreaner. It is carrying an unscheduled passenger - David Connolly - who reckons that he may have just invented the sport of Cow Surfing! This was very much a "grab shot" I was shooting a panorama on the level above when I spotted David and grabbed a different camera to catch a shot of his cow surfing. The Cow Parade is said to be the largest participative art project in the world. Having been seen by 300m people world-wide it certainly has a claim to that title! The Cow Parade is said to be the largest participative art project in the world. Having been seen by 300m people world-wide it certainly has a claim to that title! In fact there are many cow parades. The organisers provide plain white fiberglass cows - mostly in three characteristic stances - and artists and community groups in a local area come together to decorate their cow in a way that highlights a locally relevant theme. There are twelve, or more of these cows in Ebrington Square and a few others scattered around Derry. * h2. *History of this Image on Redbubble h2.
