View Larger on Chockstone Photography Kosciuszko's Blue Lake, containing Australia’s only real hope of a little ice climbing, is something of a beacon for adventurers. Back in the days of my youth, when I was somewhat obsessed with climbing, I camped in a surprisingly warm snow-cave for a week with some mates so that we might try our luck on the very limited vertical ice. Using ropes, crampons and ice axes the guys lead up some short routes, and I, the novice to ice, was allowed to follow. My most vivid memory, was not so much the climbing (which was fairly safe), but staring down a steep gully, and being informed that all those metal spikes on my person would likely embed themselves in me should I trip and fall to the bottom. Needless to say I was overtly careful. Returning some 20 years later to capture this photo brought back those thoughts. While waiting for the light I heard the sound of axe striking solid ice, echoing across the lake. Sure enough I was able to spy a couple of climbers, small as ants in the distance, slowly making their way up the steep ascent.
