View Larger on Chockstone Photography Wheelers Hut is situated near Tooma Reservoir in the Jagungal Wilderness just west of Kosciuszko National Park. It's a classic two room wood slab hut, with generous verandahs perfect for watching the sunrise across the misty mountains. Built around 1900 for grazing it saw further use for nearby mining in that era. A few traces of the Toolong Diggings still remain. My first encountered with this weathered old marvel was on a childhood hike with my father (sadly now passed away) some 35 years ago. We’d summited Mount Jagungal and spent the night out in our old leaky A-frame tent, and somewhat wet and bedraggled we came across this beauty the next day. I remembering thinking it was a glorious morning to sit on that aged verandah with a cup of tea and that contented feeling that comes with spending time in the great outdoors in good company. Fast forward to the present day and here I was once again watching the dawn light penetrate the valley fog to softly caress the old dwelling. I’d nearly not made it. Opting to hike through the night rather than carry camping gear as well as my heavy camera equipment I’d trudged through the long, dark hours only to find myself racing at the finish to get ahead of the cresting sun. My haste won me the extra minutes needed for composition, so I was ready for the moment when it happened. From time the sun broke over the mountains to the point where it was too contrasted and burnt off the lingering mist was literally a window of maybe two minutes. As landscape photographer these are the kind of moments that make it all worthwhile. Afterwards I sat by hut, let the sun warm me, and let my thoughts replay those special memories from our father-son trip all those years ago.
