The Punk Rocker
Gang-Gang Cockatoo - Callocephalon fimbriatum
This photo was taken near the Lower Glenelg National Park, Victoria, Australia
The Gang-Gang Cockatoo was one of the birds I had particularly hoped to see on my return to Australia because of it's glorious red plumage.
When I learned that there was a chance of spotting them in an area just a few hours drive from where I was staying, I made it my mission to find them.
I was lucky enough to spot one on my first outing to the National Park, hearing their distinctive call long before I spotted it in the treetops.
This glimpse only made me more determined to come back and try to photograph them.
The Lower Glenelg National Park is a haven for campers, which on occasion conflicted with my mission to get up close to the birds. Several trips later, I hit the jackpot. It was a glorious summer morning, but there were still puddles on the ground from recent rain. I could hear the distinctive call of the cockatoos in the distance, before a small Gang-Gang family came in to land. made up of a male, female and juvenile, the family slowly became comfortable with my presence, focusing on drinking from the puddles before the heat of the day.
Everything just fell into place when a male landed on a branch with gorgeous tufts of moss hanging from it just in front of me. Its red-crest was lit perfectly in the morning light, dappled by the overhead gums.
It was one of those perfect moments when you can walk away with an image you are over the moon about. Not only had I seen a bird that I love, but now I had captured a photo of one I could be very proud of :)
