View Larger on Chockstone Photography Craigs Hut on the ever popular Mount Stirling is undoubtedly the most well photographed high country mountain hut in Victoria, possibly the whole country. Having captured it many times over the course of a lifetime, I stood before it wondering how I could avoid the cliché view and do something a little different. The sun sank and, with a number of fellow photographers all lined up for the shot, we watched some glorious colour fill the evening sky. I decided to go big, wide and all-encompassing to really exhibit the grandeur of the little wooden dwelling, all alone on the mountain below that vast expanse of stormy cloud. Hopefully this depiction is a little more unique. If you’ve never been to this location it is something of a must-do for adventures assuming you have access to a sturdy vehicle for the long windy dirt roads. The last couple of kilometres require a four wheel drive, or a nice, though steep walk. In the past I have seen tourist busses arrive, so presumably that is also an alternative. If the popularity of the place seems off putting, consider a winter x-country ski trip instead. With the gates locked for the snow season, you are pretty much guaranteed of having the place to yourself, though the hike is a serious struggle.
