View Larger on Chockstone Photography The golden light of dawn highlights the Flinders Ranges, the largest mountain range in South Australia. Residing some 200 km north west of Adelaide and occupying 430 km, it's a popular tourist destination. Most people start their exploration from Wilpena Pound, a large natural amphitheatre covering nearly 80 square kilometres and containing a useful petrol station (you are somewhat in the middle of no-where) and campground with facilities. Being a national park, there are plenty of walks, but fair warning the place can get hot and dry being more akin to a desert wilderness. Alternatively there are also some great scenic drives, 4-wheel drive not required, though it wouldn't be out of place. Moments after I captured this scene, that beautiful direct light of dawn that was spot lighting the mountain range vanished to be replaced by the onrush of a mighty dust storm. Within the hour the entire Flinders region was invisible, the hills mere darker shapes within a soupy murk. Hazy conditions persisted for days, so I was very happy to have got this shot when I did.
