Apollo Spring
The mineral springs at West Baden, Indiana drew the people to the area and made it famous. At the entrance to the structure, the word "Apollo" was inscribed in the circular foundation. The name was derived from Apollo in Greek mythology, who was the god of the sun, prophecy, music, medicine, and poetry.
The stone structure that resembles a dome itself is located about seventy-five yards from the entrance of the hotel. It is on the east side of the sunken garden. Originally the spring area was enclosed with metal railing.
In their attempt to simplify the hotel and its surroundings, the Jesuits filled in the spring with rock and cement so that the spring would not function. After the spring was capped, it was converted into a shrine for saints. Today the floor of the Apollo Spring is a smooth concrete slab.
