Wildflowers, Lake Cootapatamba, Kosciuszko, New South Wales, Australia
Australian Landscape Photography by Michael Boniwell. All images copyright. This is a tack sharp 92 megapixel image, suitable for enormous enlargements. View Larger on Chockstone Photography Although I’ve been up near Kosciuszko’s summit ridge many times there is always a certain sense of satisfaction to be felt upon hiking there. On this trip I’d walked through the day and most of the night along the main range track, only slumping down onto the grass below the summit around 3am. I was too tired to be bothered with my tent. Despite some serious wind gusts it was relatively mild so I just lay down where I was and slept for a couple of hours, using my pack as a pillow. All too soon dawn crept across the landscape and I forced myself into action. I’d already picked out some flowers and had the big tripod up, so it was just a question mounting the camera and waiting for the light. The wind, however, kept swirling down the valley intent on playing havoc. I had my large, gale blocking umbrella, but it was the subject not the camera that was moving. By the time the sun was painting the summit ridge I finally had my shutter speeds up enough to lock those petals down. I kept at it for nearly three hours, shooting in lulls and reshooting each composition several times. This allowed me to cherry pick (or in this case daisy pick) the tack sharp frames. Packing up I hiked back to Charlottes Pass arriving at about the same time I’d left the day before, very happy with my blossom hunting efforts.
