If you are driving up to Kosciuszko National Park from Khancoban to Thredbo, you will invariably pass through a region containing Tom Groggin farm Station, as well as a Tom Groggin Campround and Tom Groggin Horse Camp. This delightful collection of locations on banks of the upper Murray River are great for mountain bikers, bushwalkers and horse riders, as well as those simply looking to enjoy the river. For extreme off-roaders, you can also cross the river to access the 4WD tracks of the Victorian High Country.
Tom Groggin station, which resides just outside the National Park on 2000 acres, has been a working cattle property since 1860 and is of considerable historic significance. The station offers accommodation options for those wanting to spend some coin. Otherwise camping inside Kosciuszko National Park is quite easy, as is simply continuing your drive.
On this occasion I had exhausted myself hiking the main range of Kosciuszko during winter, and was heading home early for some much needed rest. This mentality, of being off-duty, photographically speaking, actually had the opposite effect. Freed from the pressure to make an image and with time on my hands, I relaxed and saw compositions in places I had driven passed for years. The result was this image.
When the streaming light appeared I was already set up for the shot. Incredibly the conditions simply became ever more beautiful the longer I watched. The sun moved into the perfect position, as if I had willed it to happen. What a fantastic way to finish up a photography trip.
