View Larger on Chockstone Photography The Sentinel is an abrupt peak not far off the main range track in Kosciuszko National Park. If you’ve never done the main range walk before, and enjoy an alpine experience put it on the top of your “must be done” list. It’s right up there with Australia’s best hikes. Lots of tourists do the walk to the summit from Threadbo as a day trip, and that’s fine for what it is, but they miss out on the best scenery Kosciuszko has to offer. An overnight hike will let you complete the whole main range as a circuit departing from and returning to Charlottes Pass, including Kosciuszko summit and the Sentinel as two minor side trips. The weather can be serious of course, and doing it in winter snow is not a light undertaking, but in summer the track is as well defined as an urban footpath and water can be found in several places, particularly if you’re prepared to nip down into a valley for it. Well recommended for the anyone with a enough alpine sense and moderate fitness.
