The Pinnacles, Nambung National Park, Western Australia
Australian Landscape Photography by Michael Boniwell. All images copyright. This is image is suitable for enormous prints. View Larger on Chockstone Photography The Pinnacles are a cluster of limestone pillars, some up to 3.5 metres tall that rise up out of the desert about 2 hours north of Perth in Western Australia. Located along the Coral Coast inside Nambung National Park, the Pinnacles are a popular tourist attraction, complete with Visitor Centre, which can be enjoyed on foot or via a short self-drive tour. Formed approximately 25,000 to 30,000 years ago from sea shell deposits, and eroded by winds, the shapes exposed take on many forms and are fun to explore. To really see them properly I recommended leaving the car and walking, bearing in mind the usual warnings about hat, sunscreen, water and at least someone in the group with a sense of direction. The landscape does tend to all look alike after you've hoofed it over a few low hills and turned yourself around a few times. Just remember that the sun sets over the ocean which is clearly visible and walking away from it means you're heading out into an endless desert. During my brief visit, I spent the afternoon there wandering amidst the formations, selecting a composition and had the pleasure of escorting a nice couple back to their bus who were convinced east was west. When the light became an intensive golden hue, I was ready with the camera and got to enjoy a peaceful day's end. Lovely!
