View Larger on Chockstone Photography The city of Mount Gambier is the second most populated in South Australia. It's bigger than you think, and has several tourist attractions including volcanic and limestone craters, parks, gardens, caves and sinkholes to explore. Among these is Tantanoola Cave, which boasts a 30m wide chamber filled with lots of wonderful stalactites and stalagmites believed to have been formed by ancient oceans. It's fairly cheap, at least compared to some other caves across the border in Victoria, and the best part is not only do they welcome cameras and the all important tripod, but, unlike most other touristy caves there are no time restrictions or supervision required once you've complete the guided tour. Our boy and I spent several hours just in this chamber so that I could gain the photography time I needed between waves of visitors. At aged eight, he loved the place and didn't want to leave, particularly after he got hold of one of my heavy cameras for the first time. The thing looked extremely large in his hands, but after a little instruction he fired off shots at anything that interested him and had a ball. Many thanks to the very friendly staff.
