View Larger on Chockstone Photography Spargos Hut on Victoria's popular Mount Hotham was built in 1928 as a base for gold prospecting, but is now mainly used by cross country skiiers and hikers. Its location, which was choosen based on the close proximity of a natural spring, is something of a slog to trek to, though well worth the effort once you finally ascend the peak on which it resides. At the time this image was created, the hut remained in it original state, having survived intact for all those years. Made of corrugated iron and wood, its simple construction is of historical significance, providing a good example of high country huts erected in the period. Spargos Hut is one of a trilogy of huts that form a popular, though lengthy 18km circuit aptly called The Huts Walk which links three such historic dwellings. If you're in the Hotham region and looking for a challenge this would be good adventure.
