Rocky Valley Lake, Falls Creek, Victoria, Australia
Australian Landscape Photography by Michael Boniwell. All images copyright. This is image is suitable for enormous prints. View Larger on Chockstone Photography Rocky Valley Lake resides high on the alpine meadows behind Falls Creek ski village. At 1600m this is the highest significant body of water in Australia. It is dammed at the village end but Bogong High Plains road will take you across and all the way to Omeo if you so wish. In winter time the gates are closed, but you can snow shoe or cross country ski your way around the lake. In any other season you can drive right around it, stopping at various points to do some site seeing, or even have a swim. Fishing is permitted, and brown and rainbow trout in excess of four kilograms can be found. There are also plenty of hikes that lead out from the lake that take you to the many wonderful high county huts in the area. It was on one such trip that I found myself sitting beside the water watching the sun go down. I was particularly enjoying the colourful heather and little wild flowers, so set up a composition around that theme and waited. The sun sank below the horizon, but I resisted the urge to pack up knowing from past experience that sometimes the best light occurs just on twilight. As luck would have it I was not disappointed, the whole scene took on a magenta hue and the sky glowed with reflected warmth. Within a minute or two it was gone, but I had it in the bag and walked out happy with the image and my time in the mountains.
